The Psychology of Emotional Pacing: How Hotels Match, Lead, and Gently Shift Guests’ Emotional Rhythm Throughout the Stay

Abstract

Emotional pacing refers to the way hotels recognize, match, and gently influence guests’ emotional rhythm throughout the
hotel stay. Guests arrive with different emotional states, expectations, and levels of energy, suggesting that emotionally attuned

interactions may contribute to more supportive and meaningful guest experiences. This conceptual paper explores the psychol-
ogy of emotional pacing from a Mind Genomics perspective and presents four AI-assisted conceptual mindsets that illustrate

alternative ways guests may interpret emotional pacing across key service touchpoints, including arrival, check-in, communica-
tion, environmental cues, stressful situations, activity recommendations, and departure. Rather than representing empirically

derived guest segments, these mindsets are intended to stimulate discussion and provide alternative psychological perspectives

for understanding diverse guest expectations. Building upon these conceptual insights, the paper presents six strategic opportu-
nities illustrating how emotional pacing may be considered in staff training, service design, guest interactions, and emotionally

responsive hotel management. The paper further discusses the potential role of AI in supporting future approaches to emotion-
al pacing through conceptual exploration, personalized service design, staff training, and future research. Overall, the paper

proposes emotional pacing as a valuable psychological perspective for understanding hotel guest experiences and provides a
conceptual framework for future empirical investigation.
